Otakon 2009: King Kai

I made this costume for Otakon 2009.
My friend stated for the last few years Otakon has had a rather large dragon ball gathering and she's a big dragon ball fan. So since there were four of use the idea hit us: Why not do the four Kais. Well since I live the farthest up North, I became King Kai: North Kai.
We were only in our outfits for maybe 2 hours due to the heat (yea these are hot do to the masks), but they were fun and alot of photos were taken.

I made the mask and the outfit. The hardest part was in fact the tunic as it is one whole piece. The sleeves come out of the shoulders and the yellow striping is hand made bias tape (yes burned fingers). The symbol on the front is embroidered (yeah for embroidery machine for xmas). That's the reason it's not huge, but a huge one wouldn't have looked right as I'm not as horizontally huge as King Kai is. And yes he does have his halo and Bubbles the monkey (a fur real friend who really moves and makes monkey sounds). The blue gloves were actually dyed the night before in a cup of water. I surprised myself by being able to semi match the other fabric of the mask (it's so close it's uncanny).
